Trial of activists postponed until 10 March

Kasr El Nil Misdemeanor Court has postponed the retrial of activists Ahmed Maher, Ahmed Doma and Mohamed Adel to 10 March to hear their defense.

The three activists had been sentenced to three years in prison for violating the new protest law, which requires prior authorization from the Interior Ministry before holding demonstrations.

The court heard the testimony of Mansour al-Gamal, commander of the Abdeen Court Guard, who claimed that the defendants attacked the court’s security forces.

The defense said it would present videos of the violence that took place outside the court on that day.

Prosecutors had charged the defendants with violating the demonstration law, beating the court guards, disrupting traffic, bullying and destroying a cafe adjacent to the court, and demanded the maximum penalty for them.

They said the accused arrived to the scene with 500 members of the 6 April Movement while Ahmed Maher was turning himself in for charges in case pertaining to the Shura Council demonstration. The group then allegedly assaulted and injured seven guards. Prosecution then presented videos of the assault to the court.
