Egyptian Authorities Arrest Armed Hamas Elements in the City of Al-Arish

Palestinians in the Egyptian city of Al-Arish after the destruction of the wall of separation on the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt said that they witnessed armed men belonging to Hamas, wearing civilian clothing, in two cars Al-Arish, who intended to arrest members of the Fatah movement who fled to Egypt after the Hamas coup against the Palestinian Authority in the Gaza Strip. Witnesses told ''Aafaq'' that Egyptian Central Security forces cordoned off the area where the Hamas gunmen, who were 14 in number, were located and arrested them, confiscating their weapons and the vehicles in which they were traveling.

Egyptian news media have reported the arrest of Palestinian gunmen inside its territory, but have not referred to this incident or indicated the political affiliations of the arrested gunmen, while Hamas, on its part, has reluctantly acknowledged the arrest of some of its members in Egypt, attributing it to "criminal offences, nothing more."

And during a press conference in Gaza, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Zahhar, one of the Hamas leaders, apologized to Egypt for the bad behavior of some Palestinians toward Egyptian soldiers.

Palestinian sources announced that Dr. Al-Zahhar will lead a Hamas delegation that is to visit Egypt on Wednesday, at Egypt's invitation, to discuss current issues, including the dialogue between Hamas and Fatah and the issue of Rafah.
