When I Complained about Sheikh Abdul Jalil Shalabi to God Almighty
Victims of Al-Azhar's Satanic Curricula (Part 2). From the book: "Al-Azhar: The Greatest Enemy of Islam."
I. The Trial at Al-Azhar
1. During my trial inside Al-Azhar University due to my book The Prophets in the Holy Quran in 1985, the university requested the opinions of senior scholars. Among them was a person whose name I have forgotten—a modern, well-groomed sheikh famous for his openness. He had obtained a doctorate during a mission to Germany and returned boasting of himself and his German degree. Yet, deep inside, he remained a narrow-minded, detestable Azharite. He wrote the worst report on the book The Prophets in the Quran and even publicized its contents. Dr. Abdel Qader Sayed Ahmed (may God have mercy on him), who was the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Cairo University and a pillar of the "People of the Quran," learned of the matter. He met this doctor and asked why he resented a book filled with Quranic verses. The doctor replied: "Don’t talk to me about Quran and not Quran. Dr. Ahmed [Mansour] is an employee who is supposed to say what Al-Azhar says and never deviate from it." This creature benefited nothing from Germany in terms of openness to freedom of opinion and thought; he entered it with Azharite disbelief and left it with the same.
2. There were other reports attacking the author’s faith and works, demanding the maximum punishment. They were all prejudiced except for one opponent who was noble in his dispute: Sheikh Abdul Jalil Shalabi, the Secretary-General of the Islamic Research Academy at the time. He prepared a comprehensive report on my book. I kept a copy of this report out of respect for its author.
II. Sheikh Abdul Jalil Shalabi’s Original Report
In his report, Dr. Abdul Jalil Shalabi stated:
1. "This book, in all its pages, revolves around a noble and beautiful idea: the desire to purify Islam—creed and law—from the stains of polytheism (shirk). It seeks to ensure the Muslim's creed is devoted to God alone and that their worship is free from any suspicion related to polytheism. In explaining and proving this idea, he cited many Quranic verses and some hadiths alongside his rational deductions. He elaborated on his idea and evidence with a tedious repetition, most of which offers nothing new. Regardless, he is to be thanked for this emotion and sincere desire to guide Muslims to the truths of religion. Like all authors, the book was not devoid of errors in expression, thinking, and deduction alike."
After presenting what he viewed as the book's errors, Sheikh Abdul Jalil wrote under the heading "Concluding Word": "The author is one of the sons and sheikhs of Al-Azhar. He is undoubtedly noble in purpose, and he is thanked for his zeal as well as his familiarity with the Bible... His enthusiasm led him to a lack of deliberation in drawing conclusions. I suggest he be questioned regarding his views in this book—those I mentioned and those I did not. He shall either convince or be convinced. I hope all of this is done calmly, without clamor, and without personal offense. Truth is the child of research, and it is the goal of us all. We ask Almighty God for our guidance and success." Signed: Dr. Abdul Jalil Shalabi
2. Sheikh Abdul Jalil wrote that report in his own hand, testifying to my integrity, noble purpose, and sincere enthusiasm. He noted that my errors were ordinary "like all authors." He recommended my trial be based on persuasion and conducted calmly without touching my person, reaffirming that I was "one of the sheikhs of Al-Azhar."
3. I had no personal acquaintance with Sheikh Abdul Jalil, but when I read his report in 1985, I felt that goodness still existed in the world and that there were still men who spoke the truth in defense of the oppressed. In those difficult days, I held a virtual "honoring ceremony" for him in my heart. Unfortunately, this ceremony did not last long. Sheikh Abdul Jalil himself soon extinguished the lamps and turned the celebration into a funeral where I stood receiving condolences.
III. The Shift After Retirement
1. After retiring, Sheikh Abdul Jalil found a job at Al-Gomhuria newspaper as the editor of a daily column called "Quran and Sunnah." At that time, attacking me was a profitable trade. From 1986 onward, he began attacking my person, publicly accusing me of things he knew were unjust and which contradicted what he had written in his documented report.
2. His accusations revolved around my faith and receiving foreign funding. He accused me of being a Baha'i and of attacking the prophets. It is enough to respond by referring back to his own praise of my creed in his report. He even reached a low point by claiming that I was attacking the Prophet by quoting the verse "And He found you wandering, and He guided you," treating me as the speaker rather than God Almighty! If he had read my other books on history and sources, he would have known my opposition to Shiism, which is the spiritual father of Baha'ism.
3. Regarding the financial accusations, he would use phrases like: "It is said they provide him with enough money, and God knows best," or "It is said he receives an income in the thousands." Due to this incitement, I was forced to flee to America for my life, leaving my wife and children. I eventually returned and entered prison for the second time in October 1988. Sheikh Abdul Jalil did not show mercy; he wrote on January 3, 1989, that I was living in America receiving thousands in monthly income. Laughably, after realizing the falsehood of his claim, he wrote on October 6, 1989: "It was said that his funds were in some banks and were not delivered to him, and God knows best." I must ask: what were these banks, and why did they not give me my money when I needed it most?
IV. The Reality of Poverty and the Failed Ambush
1. A young journalist close to Sheikh Abdul Jalil visited me and was shocked by the simple life in my modest apartment. He told me about the alleged millions. I remembered that my opponents at Al-Azhar had believed their own lies and referred my files to the "Illicit Gains" authority in 1986, only for a secret investigation to confirm the falsity of the claims. My actual income was merely the pension I received from Al-Azhar, which was exactly 87.5 Egyptian pounds.
2. This young journalist worked for a Gulf newspaper that had attacked me harshly. This newspaper ordered him to make a debate about Sunna between me and the famous scholars in that time. I asked him to hold a debate between me and the leaders of Salafism, including Dr. Abdul Jalil Shalabi until I will be sure that my sayings will be exactly untouched . He promised my words would not be manipulated. I consulted my late friends Dr. Farag Foda and Philip Gallab; both warned me it was a conspiracy. When the journalist returned, I declined. He then confessed that while I lived in poverty, the "wealthy professors" had each demanded a huge sum for the debate, and by my refusal, they lost that money.
V. A Final Appeal to Justice
1. In November 1987, as I was finishing my book The Law of God and the Law of Men, a small "army" came to arrest me in front of my wife and children. I had only 120 pounds in my pocket. I left 40 for my family and took 80 to the unknown. Two weeks later, in the darkness of Tora Prison, I was told that Al-Gomhuria was attacking me again. Sheikh Abdul Jalil wrote: "It is said money comes to him from abroad... God knows best." That was a bitter moment. All the previous calamities failed to make me cry, but his article did.
2. Professor Abdul Warith Al-Desouki from Al-Akhbar newspaper was upset by these accusations and encouraged me to respond in Al-Gomhuria. I wrote a response titled "I Complain of You to God, O Sheikh Abdul Jalil." I was so poor that I could not buy this daily newspaper It took months for me to see it. A friend found it used as a wrapper for falafel; a man named Al-Arayan at the newspaper had published a heavily censored version.
3. Al-Arayan deleted my closing words: "O Sheikh Abdul Jalil: Someone like me may despair of justice on earth, but there is still room in the justice of the Lord of the Worlds on the Day of Judgment... You and I are two opponents who have transgressed against one another; one is the oppressor and the other is the oppressed... and God knows best who is the oppressor among us. We have an appointment we shall not fail before God on the Day of the Great Presentation, about which the Quran says: 'And [all] faces shall be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Sustainer. And he will have failed who carries injustice' (Taha: 111). I await that day and hope for it... O Sheikh Abdul Jalil: I complain of you to God..."
