A friend asked me:

"Do you still talk about peace between Palestinians and Israelis after everything that has happened and continues to happen?"

I replied:

"Yes. For many years, I have believed that a just peace is far better for everyone than endless wars and conflicts. Over the years, I have proposed various peaceful ideas, including the concept of a single state in which all people could live together with equal rights under a system that guarantees justice, security, and dignity for all."

He asked:

"Do you still believe such a solution is possible?"

I answered:

"I hope so, and I still believe it is worth considering. However, a comprehensive and lasting settlement may take much longer than many people expect."

After a brief pause, I added:

"That is why another question came to my mind—one that is less ambitious than solving the entire conflict, yet perhaps a step in the right direction."

"What question?" he asked.

I said:

"If agreement on land, borders, and sovereignty remains difficult, could we at least remove the holy sites from the conflict itself?"

He looked surprised.

"What do you mean?"

I explained:

"I mean the area that includes Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the sacred Jewish religious sites. These places are not important to one people alone. They hold profound spiritual significance for hundreds of millions—indeed billions—of people around the world."

"And what are you proposing?" he asked.

I replied:

"I am not speaking about the entire city of Jerusalem, nor about national borders, nor about the sovereignty of one side or another. I am simply asking whether it might be possible to establish a special status for these sacred sites themselves—a status that guarantees open and secure access for all believers and protects them from becoming part of a continuing political conflict."

"So you mean a neutral religious zone?" he asked.

"Something close to that," I said.

"A place where Muslims can visit Al-Aqsa Mosque in peace, Christians can visit the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in peace, and Jews can visit their sacred sites in peace. A place where everyone can come in safety, mutual respect, and freedom."

"But the details would be extremely complicated," he replied.

"Perhaps," I said. "But I am not presenting a complete political blueprint, nor do I claim to have all the answers. Questions of administration and governance can be discussed by policymakers, legal experts, international institutions, and advocates of peace if genuine political will exists."

Then I paused and added:

"What matters to me is the principle itself. If these places are sacred to billions of people, should they remain part of a conflict? Or should we begin exploring ways to transform them into symbols of coexistence rather than symbols of division?"

My friend smiled and said:

"People may disagree with the idea, but it is certainly worth thinking about."

I replied:

"That is all I am asking for."

It is simply a question for discussion.
