نص السؤال
Salamun Alaikum Dear Dr. Mansour, I have question on verse 9:5 and verse 2:191. I read in almost all translations it says "kill them". My question is can they be captured if they have been killed (in 9:5)? Same goes to versus 2:191 how can they be expelled if they have been killed.Would it be possible if it should be translated "fight them" instead of "kill them".I never see it is translated as fight them. Fight them and kill them is very different. In English kill them gives an impression of murder/masacere them. War (fight) objective is to win/conquest/subdue not necessary to murder.I don't speak arabic, so maybe you can explain me from linguist pov.Another question is for 47:4. In all translations it says "strike their neck". To me it does not make sense. The word RQB is also used in 2:177 for slave/captive, so may be in 47:4 it should be translated something like "enslave them or capture them".Salam,Adam K From Housto.

The Holy Quran has its unique terminology. In field of fighting the transgressors for defence, the Quranic Arabic word ( Katelo ) and / or ( Oktolo ) means only ( fight ) not ( kill ) .

For example :

Chapter  2 : 190 – 193 , 217 , 244.

Chapter 3 ; 111 , 167 , 195 .

Chapter 4 : 75 : 76 , 89 : 91 .

Chapter 8 : 39.

Chapter 9 : 5 , 12 : 14 , 29 , 36 , 83 , 111, 123 .

Chapter 48 : 16 .

Chapter 49 : 9.

Chapter 57 : 10 .

Chapter 59 : 14.

Chapter 60 : 8 , 9.

Chapter 61 : 4.

Chapter 73 : 20.

Fighting in Islam is just to defend , not to start war, It is to make peace, so , The Islamic state must be peaceful and ready to defend itself as well. ( 8 :   60 ) . Details in our article (http://www.ahl-alquran.com/English/show_article.php?main_id=6674
