Im from Pakistan and I do not know Arabic. Thats why I need your guidance. "The problem is that Muslims look into hadiths and use them to 'explain' quran. This is contrary to what God instructs beleivers to do. The fact that wife beating was a practice accepted by the Arabs before prophet muhammad came with quran, the same practice somehow found a way into Islam through the 'hadiths' that supposedly came from the prophet. One only has to read quran with an open mind and follow the ways in which God instructed us to follow in order to understand the verses. The word used which is translated as beating has different meanings. God requests us in such cases to use our intellect and ponder on the verses also by using other similar verses which he explains the same idea. One of the other meanings of the word used is to seperate. Now logically, after a wife has been spoken to, advised and warned, abandoned and left alone in her bed, yet still refuses to 'listen'...what good would 'light beating eg with a siwak stick do? Any beating regardless how light or strong would not solve the situation. However, if we take the alternative meaning of the word and we consider the husband separating/leaving her for a while while getting help from other respectable people, for example her family or the imam to sort of help the two parties resolve their differences, that would be more of a practical solution. Honestly, as a woman, if I feel that my husband is wrong and have refused to agree with him to this extent, it would mean that the situation is serious. ..and for him to beat me lightly would offend me rather than 'shake' me. Women Are not cows nor donkeys nor camels. And we are requested to obey only God...not husbands. If a husband is unjust or asking us to do something that is wrong, for sure we will not agree with him. In that case,, would God permit him to beat us? The quran has been wrongly interpretate in many places due to these false hadiths. And Muslims are mislead many times because ether are taught to fear God more than love him. But even above this, they fear rejecting these ridiculously false hadiths in case they offend prophet muhammad. What would offend the prophet in my opinion is attributing such false and barbaric claims to him." Moreover, there are other verses in Quran that forbid harming ones wife. So these contradict each other. The most stupid thing is when mullahs start viewing this verse as sexual spaking. Some men like to spank and women like to get spanked but this verse isnt a sex lesson. How do you view this ayah?
