The National Salvation Front (NSF) said on Monday it denounces any attacks on the Egyptian army after at least 42 people were killed in scenes of horrific violence outside the Republican Guards House in eastern Cairo Monday.

A NSF statement said the opposition coalition “strongly condemns all forms of violence and any assault on military establishments and armed forces personnel."

The front also called for an immediate and impartial investigation into Monday morning's tragic events, adding that the results of the probe should be made available both in Egypt and internationally.

According to state television, at least 42 people were killed in violence that erupted between security forces and supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsy at the Cairo headquarters of the Republican Guards.

An army statement Monday blamed a "terrorist group" who reportedly tried to storm the facility, where some Islamist protesters believe Morsy is currently being held.
