The Center for Trade Union & Workers' Services [CTUWS] 6th of June 2013Few hours ago tens of Cairo Airport workers have started a protest against resolutions of the Civil Aviation Minister; Eng. Wael Al Maadawy. Resolutions include the dismissal of 15 workers and investigating with other 35 for blocking work and delaying flights on Wednesday. This is aligned to worker's strike for renaming their incentives to be bonus as an introduction to cancel them so as to secure resources to finance the demands of the customs workers who belong to the Ministry of Finance and started their a strike for four consecutive days.
The customs workers (who belong to the Ministry of Finance) have gone into strike last Monday calling for the elimination of corruption, enlarging penalties by the customs law, rationalizing the customs exemptions, in addition to modifying some of the customs processes and procedures. Meanwhile, they called for improving their income in order to guarantee a respectable life for them and their families; they called for a human transportation and stations for workers in the remote areas. After their meeting with the Minister of Civil Aviation, the minister has decided to fulfill their demands. However, he has also decided to change incentives of the Cairo Airport workers to bonus, the fact that infuriated them and thus they went into a strike on Tuesday night. They chanted against leaders of the airport and the holding company calling for receiving their incentives equally like the customs' workers.
Consequently, Eng. the Civil Aviation Minister; Eng. Wael Al Maadawy has decided to lay 15 workers off including: Ahmed Al Sayed Shahat, Hany Anwar Fouad, Mohamed Adel Hassan, Haitham Rafaat Abdel Rahman, Ahmed Abdel Salam Mehana, Hamdi Abdel Raheem Al Shekh, Ahmed Al Saied Al Nabarawy, Mohamed Husni Kamel, Mohamed Orabi, Mohamed Abdullah Soliman, Ahmed Ahmed Awad, Mahmoud Galal Hassan, Hamdy Abdel Gawad Abdel Rahman, Sameh Mohamed Ashmawy, Mohamed Saied Mohamed. In addition, other 36 workers have been suspended to be investigated.
The Center for Trade Union & Workers' Services [CTUWS] supports the legitimate demands of the airport workers on strike, knowing that the "irritating" reaction of the minister was the trigger for the incidents as we agree with workers understanding that changing incentives to bonus includes an intention to preach their rights. CTUWS calls all the democratic forces and the civil society to support the dismissed workers and to stand against the violation conducted by the Minster against the right to strike afforded by all the international conventions and accords signed by Egypt.
